Psychogenic polydipsia in bipolar disorder: A case report

Abstract

Psychogenic polydipsia is a well-recognized clinical entity that is often seen in individuals with psychiatric disorders, especially schizophrenia. However, psychogenic polydipsia has been rarely reported in those with mood disorders. In this case report, a patient with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder who developed psychogenic polydipsia during his prophylactic treatment is presented. Quetiapine was added to ongoing valproic acid treatment after the apperance of polydipsia. The improvement in polydipsia and polyuria as well as hypomanic symptoms may be related to the antidopaminergic effect of quetiapine which should be considered as an alternative in the treatment of psychogenic polydipsia.

Bipolar bozuklukta psikojenik polidipsi: Bir olgu sunumu Psikojenik polidipsi, özellikle şizofreni hastalarında sık, duygudurum bozukluğu hastalarında ise nadiren bildirilen bir durumdur. Bu yazıda psikojenik polidipsisi olan bir bipolar bozukluk hastası bildirilmiştir. Hastanın devam eden valproik asit tedavisine ketiapin eklendi. Tedaviye cevapla birlikte psikojenik polidipside belirgin bir düzelme oldu. Hastada ketiapin kullanımı sonrası hipomani belirtilerinin yanı sıra polidipsi ve poliürinin de düzelmesi, ilacın antidopaminerjik etkinli ğine bağlanabilir.
